Do you have to have a college degree to be a spanish/english translator?

It depends on where/who you plan on working for. Some places will require you to have a degree. Some places know that a college degree doesn't guarantee fluency in one language, let alone two. Translating requires more than knowing two languages; it requires perfect grammar/spelling skills in both languages, plus knowledge of idiomatic expressions, colloquialisms, slang, etc. in both languages. If you have these, I would suggest you test for certification with someone like Berlitz, University of Arizona, etc.

I know many translators who got their start working for a translation company and through that company obtained certification. Good luck.
